Living as a retired person can be more complicated than it seems for some people. There are some persons that die soon after retiring. A lot of people believe this happens because they feel they are not useful anymore, or because they do not find any reason for living. The truth is that some people have to go to therapy with a psychologist to recover from the depression of finding themselves with nothing to do after so many years of hard-working.
Work in a Different Place
If working is very important to you, try starting a new business or working in someone else’s firm. Retirement is from one specific company, not from the whole world. Maybe a friend or relative has a place where you can work in something that is gratifying. Maybe this is an opportunity to work in a different area or activity that you are interested in. You can even work in a part-time job if you want.
Start a Hobby
Hobbies can keep your mind busy and keep you entertained. Creating works of art is an excellent hobby. Some people recommend art as a hobby and even as a therapy to overcome the different problems and depressions that one might have in life. In art, there is always something new to learn and there are plenty of competitions that you can enter to keep yourself busy improving your technique and knowledge. Anyone of the fine arts will be great, as long as you are interested in it.
Practice a Sport
Maybe you always liked the idea of practicing a sport like fishing or hunting, and never had the time to do so. Living as a retired person gives you the opportunity to start doing those new activities. You can go to a lake or a forest with some friends and have fun. Maybe you can even go camping if you plan to stay for the night.
Make New Friends
A great way to spend your free time is to make new friends (that are also retired) and hang out with them. You can find them by entering: senior fitness classes, private gyms, religious groups, cultural clubs, amateur sports teams, art clubs, book clubs, Facebook groups, language classes, etc. You can also do volunteer work or go to places like museums, zoos, aquariums, parks, food or art festivals, etc.
Make repairs to Your House
Many people are too busy to make improvements to their houses because they are constantly working. If you now have the time, enjoy this opportunity. Try to remember the places in your house that could be improved or have some sort of problem, and work on them. If these improvements are too complicated for a single person to make them, talk to an architect and see what solutions he or she recommends and how much they would cost.
Study Something You Like
Get enrolled in a course that you enjoy. Maybe there was a subject in school that you liked (like history or astronomy) or another interesting area of knowledge that you heard about later in life. With the Internet, you have many options to study it. You can enroll in courses on the web or in a university, or you can enroll in a MOOC. Maybe you can simply look up the information on the Internet or buy specialized books on the subject on sites like Amazon.com.
Books can transport us to distant times and places. We can learn about different cultures and even learn new ways to structure ideas and understand many aspects of life. A lot of people read very little because they lack time. Living as a retired person allows you to enjoy the benefits of reading more than ever before. You can read books on several different topics or specialize in a certain topic of interest.
If you are living as a retired person, do what most people dream about doing: take very long vacations. Go to places that you always dreamed of knowing. Enjoy your time and have fun. You can visit all types of places, where you can do relaxing activities, learn about the history of the city you are visiting and its culture, etc.
The people that remain active in their last years of life, usually have been active all the time and they all have a reason to live. Try to do exercise regularly and find some activity that you like to do. In other words, do everything that your job never allowed you to do and enjoy it as much as you can. If you can find retired people that enjoy doing the same activities as you, then you will have a good company and you will really like living as a retired person.
